CASTLES

One of Valsugana’s main source of wealth is the cultural heritage of churches and castles with historical and artistic values.

Castel Pergine, Pergine Valsugana
Belonged to the Lords of Pergine, it was first occupied by the Carrara, then by the Tyrolese and in the end by the Tridentine Church until the beginning of the 20th century; finally it was bought by a German Company which restored it.
The building is divided in two city walls one inside the other: one is a medieval fortification with a protective function of the castle, the other is a Renaissance residential area. Two areas of particular importance are the “ prigione della goccia” and the Camera del Camino, famous for its legend about the apparition of the white lady’s ghost. Today here take place contemporary art exhibitions, cultural and musical events.

Castel Telvana, Borgo Valsugana
The core of the castle lies on the primitive rock and inside can be noticed the curtains which linked the bulwarks and protected the residence, now cut off. Around a wall you can find the square tower on which you can appreciate the remains of the original battlements.
The upper building dates back to the Roman Empire, while the lower building belongs to Gothic style. You are not allowed to visit the castle inside, anyway you can reach it starting from Borgo then following a mule – track named “ path of the castles”.

Castel Ivano, Ivano Fracena
Castel Ivano dates back to 550 AD. Surrounded by strong walls, on its sides stand the “Palazzo di qua” and the “Palazzo di là”. The castle was considered a Roman fortified shelter and its importance in the Middle Ages was determined by its strategic position. At the end of the Ivano lords rule, the castle passed under the power of Caldonazzo Lords, of Venetians and of Wolkenstein – Trotsburg Counts. At the end of the Great War it was bought by the Staudacher’s  family.
